Jack Hanslope

I am a PhD student at the University of Bristol studying Artificial Intelligence.

I am part of the CDT in Interactive AI and the Bristol Computational Neuroscience Unit and I’m supervised by Laurence Aitchison.

Currently, I am working using supervised learning methods on weather datasets. I’m attempting to improve short-term predictions of low-dimensional variables without the use of generative models.

Earlier in my PhD, my work was focused on developing new techniques for inverse reinforcement learning (IRL). I was investigating whether IRL agents are better able to learn when the expert they are observing can display carefulness when they perceive themself to be at risk of catastrophe. Initial findings in a discrete state-space showed that the introduction of carefulness can improve learning.

Prior to starting my PhD, I worked in software development at Techmodal and before that, I studied for an MMath in mathematics at the University of Exeter.

When I’m not working, you’ll probably find me sailing, climbing or out for a run.
